Something i'm thinking about while i count down the minutes till the end of the day... I've got a SYMBOL bar-code scanner sitting next to me that i obtained many years ago... Its a pretty nifty device, helps me with keeping track of various assets and useful for putting in serial numbers of various servers etc...
While i'm sitting here playing with it, i remember seeing demo's of people using fancy high end software and special laser setups to accurately model to insanely fine degrees 3D objects....
I'm now wondering, if i attached this to a steady rotating enclosure and put an object in the middle, could i figure out a way to get a 3D rendering of it?
This would come in handy mostly for keys at the moment, i'd love to be able to just scan full 3D images of keys into a computer as a CAD file or something and then have all the measurements exact so i can replicate it at will later.
There are other ways of doing this, but the main point here is can i use a bar-code scanner to generate 3D images?
Google says nothing relevant on the topic...
If you've seen it done or have any experience please let me know!

I can't see this working to be honest, to get an accurate 3D image, you need to first know the location of the reader, and then work out a distance between the reader and the object. A barcode scanner is primarily just a camera, that uses Optical Character Recognition to work out what each bar code is. You could theoretically get a 3D image using a camera on a mount moving preciceley around an object and stitching it together, but that's a lot of hassle and a barcode scanner isn't anywhere near as good as a SLR.
